Session 5: The Evidence for Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Hazard Risk Reduction

Join the Session 5 webinar in a series from the National Adaptation Forum

January 14th, 2025 | 12 pm - 2 pm PST

Climate change is already impacting species, ecosystems, and communities worldwide, challenging traditional approaches to conservation and disaster preparedness. Although numerous adaptation strategies have been proposed and implemented, few have been rigorously tested for effectiveness, leaving practitioners vulnerable to investing in solutions that may not deliver the intended outcomes or, worse, create unintended negative consequences.

Drawing on recent research and case studies, this session will focus on the growing body of evidence supporting nature-based solutions (NbS) as a promising approach to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Speakers will include:

  • Deb Rudnick (Senior Scientist, EcoAdapt) will discuss the urgent need to rigorously evaluate climate adaptation strategies and advocate for more robust monitoring and assessment to ensure their effectiveness.

  • Marta Vicarelli (Assistant Professor, Department of Economics and School of Public Policy, University of Massachusetts Amherst) will present findings from her recent research on the cost-effectiveness of NbS in reducing disaster risk, offering valuable insights into the viability of nature-based approaches.

  • Douglas Mason (Director, Environmental and Social Performance, Millennium Challenge Corporation) & Monica Dean-Millman (Director, Public Exchange Climate and Sustainability Practice, University of Southern California) will synthesize the latest results from a collaborative project involving 30 organizations, focusing on the evidence for NbS in reducing hazard risk and enhancing ecosystem services.

The session will conclude with an interactive discussion where participants will break into working groups to identify actionable steps for scaling up the implementation of NbS and accelerating the learning process to improve their effectiveness in real-world applications.
