Landscape Architect
This position is located at the Boston African American National Historic Site in Boston, MA. in the Resource Preservation and Planning Directorate Division.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES:
Provides technical expertise to internal and external stakeholders (e.g. state or municipal governments, non-profit organizations) to accomplish strategic objectives for complex landscape planning initiatives.
Analyzes land use, cultural resource characteristics, site conditions and visitor experience goals to prepare and oversee contracting packages for landscape design and planning services.
Creates and manages project proposals, timelines, and budgets.
Coordinates planning, design, fabrication and installation of environmental graphics and interpretive media that enable visitors to locate, navigate and receive options to further their heritage trail experience.
Prepares well-written and graphically compelling briefings and funding requests to advance landscape treatment and activation plans.
TERM APPOINTMENT:
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of two years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. This experience must have included original landscape design. Experience Equivalent to a Degree in Landscape Architecture: A degree in landscape architecture indicates that an applicant has the basic background to perform professional landscape architectural work at the beginning levels and has the potential to develop the skills and abilities required at the higher levels. Experience may be substituted for education to the extent that it provided the equivalent background. However, because an education provides some knowledge that cannot be measured in terms of course content, but rather is part of general knowledge and cultural background gained as a result of interrelationships among courses, careful judgment must be used in evaluation experience substituted for education as provided for in the basic requirements.
In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement as listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of specialized experience include: assemble and lead a team of interdisciplinary stakeholders organized around a common long-term organizational goal; plan and implement a long-term basic research and field experience contributing to the collection of data, drawings, photographs and primary sources for the development of a Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) or similar preliminary research document; basic understanding and use of cultural and natural resources preservation legislation, policies, guidelines and/or standards to contribute to planning documents; using industry standard design technology such as AutoCAD, InDesign and Photoshop to prepare map products for inclusion in inventory and research projects. NOTE: You must include hours per week worked.

A combination of specialized experience and directly related education. To calculate your percentage of qualifying graduate education, divide your number of semester hours in excess of 36 semester hours by 18 (or in excess of 45 quarter hours by 27) or the number your school uses to represent one year of full time graduate academic study. To calculate your percentage of experience, divide your months of qualifying specialized experience by 12. Add the two percentages. They must equal at least 100% to qualify using this option. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

Horticulture Project Manager and Designer

Title: Horticulture Project Manager and Designer

Responsibilities
The Horticulture Project Manager and Designer primarily manages horticulture projects in the field; works on planting designs; oversees contractors and service providers; coordinates horticulture Volunteer engagements; and maintains plant records. This role works with the Ecology and Horticulture Supervisor and the Maintenance Team Lead; reports to and supports the vision of the Director of Horticulture.
Coordinates and schedules planting and other projects with contractors including, but are not limited to, the following: landscape firms, irrigation services, and masons; routinely communicates with Boston Water and Sewer Commission and other municipalities.
Collaborates with the Ecology and Horticulture Supervisor on follow up care for planting projects and other maintenance in the park.
Works with the Director of Horticulture on garden and landscape design projects; manages project budgets and contracts.
Working with the Director of Horticulture and Ecology and Horticulture Supervisor hires new team members.
Collects plant data; maintains plant records and horticulture image library.
Works with the Volunteer Manager to arrange Volunteers who support horticulture projects in the park; may include tours and workshops.
Coordinates lawn care, fall clean up, trash management, and snow and ice management services with the Maintenance Team Lead.
Assists the Director of Horticulture and Ecology and Horticulture Supervisor to establish landscape and garden management plans; helps to develop departmental policies and protocols.
Supports Ecology and Horticulture Supervisor with training in general garden maintenance skills, such as: planting, pruning, weeding, watering, and mulching; use and care of tools, small power equipment, vehicles and machines; and maintaining and repairing irrigation lines.
Assist with the development of the operations budget and with invoice approvals.
Works with Outreach on interpretive signage and social media content; supports Public Art and Program and Events Departments during exhibition installations and other public engagements.
Provides information requested by Development for grants and funders; leads tours as needed.
Other tasks as requested to support the organization and department.
Skills and Preferred Qualifications
Horticulture degree or a related field, completion of a certificate program, and relevant experiences are all considered during the review and selection of candidates.
Combination of formal education and at least five (5) years of increasing supervisory responsibilities within the horticulture and landscape maintenance field; knowledge of ecological and organic practices preferred; experience working at a public garden or park preferred.
Experience working with contractors and project management.
Experience with landscape and garden design, and plant procurement.
High level of plant knowledge, including identification and nomenclature.
Knowledge of plant disease and pest problems; ability to use resources to help identify problems and find solutions.
Experience with commercial irrigation systems preferred.
Previous experience with plant records preferred.
Ability to read and understand planting and irrigation plans, specifications and related design and construction drawings is strongly preferred.
Horticulture accreditations are helpful; development opportunities are available.
Effective communication skills; ability to prioritize and plan.
Experience working with volunteers and other stakeholders is preferred.
Commitment to and knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion is valued by The Greenway.
Ability to engage and support a wide variety of people.
Valid US driver’s license in good standing.
Computer proficiency, especially in Google for Work and Microsoft Office, training is available. Design and graphic software experience is a plus.
Logistics
Full-time, on-site position. Work week is Monday through Friday, 7:30 am - 3:30 pm; with paid 15-minute morning and 45-minute lunch breaks. Communications outside of regular shifts can be expected.
Must be able to work outside in all types of weather; rain and winter outfitting is provided.
Must be able to safely lift up to 50 lbs.
May be stationary and experience changes in position for periods of time.
Safely ascending to various heights is part of the work experience.
Recording observations are included in daily operations.
